Designing interiors in Kerala

Kerala is the hardest state in South India to build interiors for, and the reason is water. It catches both monsoons, annual rainfall runs several times what Chennai sees, and humidity barely drops through the year. Materials that behave perfectly well in Coimbatore or Hyderabad fail here within a few seasons — commercial plywood swells at the base, MDF turns to pulp the first time damp reaches a cut edge, and ordinary hinges corrode even well inland. Our Kerala specification is uncompromising: BWP marine-grade plywood throughout with every cut edge sealed including the hidden ones, corrosion-resistant hardware as standard rather than as a coastal upgrade, and a ventilation gap behind any carpentry fixed against an external wall.

Termites are the second Kerala-specific problem, and they are far more aggressive here than anywhere else we work. Any timber in contact with masonry or floor needs treatment and a physical break, skirting details matter more than they do elsewhere, and we avoid deep unventilated cavities where an infestation can establish unseen. Where a client wants solid wood — and in Kerala many do, given the state's genuine joinery tradition — we specify properly seasoned and treated timber rather than whatever is available, because unseasoned wood in this humidity will move.

The third factor is how Kerala homes get built. A large share of projects here are funded by family members working in the Gulf, commissioned remotely, and built in phases as money arrives. We plan for that explicitly: each phase is complete and liveable on its own rather than a half-finished house waiting on the next remittance, with electrical and plumbing designed for the full home at phase one so a later stage never requires breaking finished walls. Many Kerala houses also retain traditional elements worth keeping — nalukettu courtyards, carved teak, laterite walls — and the right move is usually to design around them rather than strip them out.

What we watch for in Kerala

• Both monsoons and year-round humidity — marine-grade plywood throughout is the baseline, not an upgrade
• Termite pressure is higher than anywhere else in South India; treat timber and avoid unventilated cavities
• Phased builds funded from abroad are common — each phase must be complete and liveable on its own
• Traditional courtyards, laterite walls and carved teak are usually worth retaining rather than replacing
