Designing interiors in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh has the longest coastline of any state we work in, and that shapes the specification more than anything else. Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Nellore and the Godavari delta districts sit in salt-laden air, and the region takes cyclones off the Bay of Bengal most years. Salt attacks the plating on ordinary hardware within two or three seasons, and driven rain finds any gap in an external opening. For coastal AP we specify SS-304 hardware throughout, BWP marine-grade plywood with sealed edges, powder-coated aluminium instead of mild steel wherever it is exposed, and we pay particular attention to how window and door openings are sealed, because cyclone-driven rain enters horizontally in a way ordinary weathering never tests.

Inland is a different problem. Rayalaseema — Kurnool, Ananthapuramu, YSR Kadapa, Nandyal — is one of the hottest and driest parts of South India, with summer temperatures that make roof insulation and west-elevation shading far more valuable than any decorative upgrade. Where budget is limited in these districts we push clients towards insulation and cross-ventilation before finishes, because it changes how the house feels every day of the year in a way a better laminate does not. The dry air is otherwise generous: PU, lacquer and veneer all hold up well.

AP also has excellent local stone. Granite is quarried extensively around Chimakurthy, Ongole and the Prakasam belt, and buying it near the source rather than through a Chennai or Hyderabad yard makes natural stone counters, flooring and cladding markedly better value for projects in the state. Where a client is choosing between engineered surfaces and granite in AP, the arithmetic usually favours granite in a way it does not elsewhere, and we say so.

What we watch for in Andhra Pradesh

• Long Bay of Bengal coastline with regular cyclones — SS-304 hardware, marine ply and sealed openings are baseline
• Rayalaseema summers are severe; roof insulation and west shading outrank any finish upgrade
• Granite quarried locally around Ongole and Chimakurthy makes natural stone exceptional value
• Cyclone-driven rain enters horizontally — window and door sealing details need more attention than usual
