Vastu for Chennai Apartments: Kitchen, Pooja Room and Bedroom Placement That Works in Real Floor Plans

The short answer
The most commonly followed Vastu guidelines are: kitchen in the south-east with the cook facing east, pooja in the north-east facing east or west, master bedroom in the south-west, and the head of the bed towards the south or east. In an apartment where rooms are fixed, interiors can still align the cooking direction, pooja unit, bed position, mirrors and colours with these principles without moving a single wall.
For many Chennai families, Vastu is part of the brief, not an afterthought. The challenge is that most apartments come with a fixed floor plan — the kitchen is where the builder put it. The good news is that much of Vastu is about orientation and placement within a room, which interior design controls completely.
This guide describes widely followed traditional guidelines. Families and practitioners interpret Vastu differently, so if you follow a particular consultant, share their advice with your designer early.

Kitchen: adjust the cooking direction
If your kitchen is not in the south-east, you can still:
- Place the hob so the cook faces east. This single layout decision is what many families care about most. L-shaped and parallel kitchens usually allow it.
- Keep the sink and hob apart. Traditional guidance separates water and fire; it is also good kitchen planning.
- Place the refrigerator in the south-west or west of the kitchen where possible.

Pooja: a unit, not necessarily a room
Most Chennai apartments do not have a dedicated pooja room. A pooja unit in the north-east corner of the living or dining area works well. Key points:
- Deity facing east or west, with the person praying facing east or north where possible.
- Not under a staircase, against a toilet wall or inside a bedroom if avoidable.
- Ventilation for lamp and camphor smoke, a cleanable surface below, and storage for vessels.

Bedrooms: bed position and mirrors
- Head of the bed towards south or east — usually achievable in any rectangular bedroom.
- Avoid a mirror directly facing the bed. Mirror-fronted sliding wardrobes are popular in compact Chennai bedrooms; if this matters to you, place the mirror on an inner shutter or a side panel.
- Avoid beds directly under a beam. A false ceiling can conceal it.
Entrance and living room
- Keep the entrance well lit and uncluttered — plan a closed shoe cabinet rather than open racks.
- Place heavier units (TV unit, crockery) along the south and west walls.
- Keep the north-east of the living room light and open.
Colours
Light, warm and earthy tones are generally preferred — cream, beige, soft yellow and light wood. These also suit Chennai's strong light and heat.
