Best Plywood for Interiors in Chennai: BWP vs BWR vs MR vs HDHMR

The short answer
For Chennai, use BWP (boiling-water-proof) or marine plywood — IS 303 BWP grade or IS 710 marine — for kitchens, bathroom vanities and any carpentry on wet or external walls. BWR or MR plywood is acceptable for dry-room furniture like TV units and bedroom shelves away from damp walls. Avoid MDF and particle board for kitchens; Chennai's year-round humidity makes them swell.
Plywood is invisible once the shutters go on, which is exactly why it is where cheap quotes cut corners. In Chennai — where relative humidity stays high most of the year and the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain from October to December — the carcass material decides how long your furniture lasts.

BWP plywood is bonded with phenolic resin that does not break down in water. MR (moisture-resistant) ply uses urea-formaldehyde resin that tolerates humid air but not water. BWR sits in between. The names are sometimes used loosely in the market, so check the IS mark and grade printed on the sheet.
Why Chennai needs a higher grade than drier cities
- Humidity is high all year, so moisture-sensitive boards are always absorbing water.
- The northeast monsoon (October–December) brings long spells of rain, and many buildings see damp walls, seepage and high indoor moisture.
- Flood-prone areas like parts of Velachery, Pallikaranai and Mudichur have seen ground-floor water entry in heavy years.
- Coastal salt air in Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur and along ECR accelerates corrosion and moisture damage.
Cheaper boards fail in predictable ways here: the kitchen base swells at the sink, shelves sag, laminate edges lift, and wardrobes against bathroom walls develop a musty smell.
Where to use which grade
Kitchen
BWP throughout. The sink base and the area around the dishwasher or RO see water daily. This is the one place not to save.
Wardrobes
BWR is acceptable in dry bedrooms. Use BWP for any wardrobe against a bathroom wall, an external wall that gets rain, or on the ground floor.
Bathroom vanities
BWP only, with edges sealed and a gap from the floor.
TV units, study and shelving
MR or BWR is fine if the wall is dry.
Thickness matters too
- 18–19mm for carcass sides, shutters and shelves carrying load
- 12mm for internal partitions in lighter units
- 6–8mm for backs, which should never be the thin hardboard some cheap quotes use
How to check what you are getting
- Ask for the brand, grade and IS number in the written quote.
- Look for the grade stamp on the sheet when it arrives on site.
- Check that edges are machine edge-banded, not just painted. Exposed edges are where moisture gets in.
- For kitchens, ask how the sink base is protected — an aluminium or PVC sink-base liner is a good sign.
What about termites?
Termites are a real issue in Chennai, especially in older independent houses and ground floors. Good BWP and BWR plywood is usually treated against borers and termites; confirm that in writing. Also treat the site (walls and floor junctions) before carpentry goes in, particularly in renovations.
