Interiors for Coastal Homes in Chennai: Beating Salt Air in Besant Nagar, ECR and Thiruvanmiyur

The short answer
Homes within a few kilometres of the sea in Chennai — Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Neelankarai, Injambakkam and ECR — need a coastal specification: SS-304 stainless steel hardware, marine or BWP plywood with sealed edges, powder-coated aluminium instead of mild steel, coastal-rated PU and exterior paints, and treated or synthetic fabrics. Standard fittings typically rust or seize within two to three years in salt air.
Living near the sea in Chennai is wonderful for light and breeze and hard on everything metal, painted or wooden. Salt carried in humid air settles on every surface, draws in moisture and accelerates corrosion. Interiors specified for an inland apartment will fail here, often visibly within the first two or three seasons.
Which areas need a coastal specification
As a working rule, treat homes within about 2–3 km of the shoreline, or anything sea-facing, as coastal:
- Besant Nagar and Kalakshetra Colony
- Thiruvanmiyur and Valmiki Nagar
- Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Akkarai, Uthandi and Kovalam along ECR
- Santhome and parts of Foreshore Estate
- Kasimedu and Royapuram in the north

Why SS-304 and not "stainless steel"
Not all stainless steel is equal. The cheaper SS-202 grade has lower chromium and nickel and can show rust spots near the sea. SS-304 resists corrosion far better and is the minimum we specify for coastal hardware. Ask for the grade in writing.
Designing for light and view
Coastal homes in Besant Nagar and along ECR get exceptional east light. Keep sea-facing walls free of tall carpentry, use sheer curtain layers rather than heavy drapery, and choose a palette that works with strong natural light. On west-facing glass, low-E glazing cuts afternoon heat without darkening rooms.
Weekend homes and closed-up houses
Many ECR villas are second homes. A closed coastal house grows mould quickly. Design for absence:
- Ventilation that works with windows secured and partly open
- Dehumidifier points in bedrooms and store rooms
- No deep, sealed cavities where damp can sit unseen
- Fabrics and mattresses that tolerate a month without airing
What it costs
